Homework Help needs to be Consistent, Organized and Rewarding for Students

A homework expert suggests that a parent work with their child in order to help them understand the importance of homework and if the child is not responsive to a parent’s guidance, then perhaps it may be time to hire a tutor or homework helper. Children need balance, structure and organization. Many parents think that children like freedom and don’t like structure or organization but experts agree that children do better with structure such as a certain bedtime every evening, getting up at the same time every morning and knowing who will be home when they get off the school bus.

When it comes to homework, children need guidance and structure, a certain time to do their work and a certain place in which to do their homework, preferable a quiet place and the same place every day after school. By setting up a space that is all theirs, a child will learn to stay organized and take care of the area because they will be the ones using that space day in and day out. Be sure to avoid all distractions in the homework space. Do not allow them to listen to music or watch television while doing their homework, this is a major distraction.

If a parent feels they can not help their child with their homework or test preparations, then they should think about an education coach which is similar to a tutor although they have more expertise in various problems a child might have that is stopping him or her from getting good grades. There are several tests an education coach will perform at the beginning to determine if there are any learning disabilities or any other problems that could be holding your child back or preventing them from learning the material.

Homework help seems to be the number one complaint that parents have about their children’s school work. Some parents believe that their children are doing too much homework and others believe they are not doing enough. The average fourth grader spends about two to three hours a night on extra school work. Many parents think this is too much and should be what a teenager in high school should be doing instead of out with their friends and the younger ones should be home with their families.
