hearing aidsA Swedish company, Phontak hearing aids creates advanced hearing devices with either analog or digital technology that will fit completely in the canal (CIC); in the ear (ITE), behind the ear (BTE) and in the canal (ITC)These different styles of hearing aids help the slightly hearing impaired to the extremely hearing impaired to hear various degrees of sounds and voices. These different styles of hearing aids are a long way from the large square boxes hearing impaired or nearly deaf individuals used to have to wear several decades ago. These large boxes were strapped to their chest and picked up all sounds and transmitted them up to the ears through long wires; however people could not make out the difference between a person talking and a dog barking. Many people relied on reading lips and studying facial expressions in order to ‘fill in the gaps’ of what they did not hear.

Comfort is only part of the equation with the new ‘breed’ of hearing aids. They are far more advanced than just a few years ago with microprocessors that have been shrunk down to fit inside something no bigger than a dime and fits snuggly inside a person’s ear canal to be discreet and yet still help the hearing impaired person hear with great precision.

Many people feel as if a hearing aid is for older people and not for them if they are under the age of about 50; however studies have concluded that more and more young people are experiencing hearing loss and they are the largest growing population of hearing impaired persons in the country today. People will wear glasses without hesitation to help correct their vision because most glasses enhance a person’s look; however, a hearing aid seems to age a person.

The latest technology in hearing aids makes them much smaller and less noticeable and for the younger set, there are hearing aids for behind the ear that are colorful with designs and patterns by famous artists for bold statements. Most people who see these colorful hearing aids think the people wearing them have a Bluetooth head set on.
