Hair Replacement Treatments Help Millions Affected By Baldness
Approximately 20 million women and 40 million men are affected by baldness in the United States alone. When discussing this delicate topic, it usually ends up turning to a discussion about hereditary conditions known as ‘androgenetic alopecia’ which makes up 95% of all varieties of hair loss.
Male pattern baldness is referring to the upward withdrawal or departure of the hairline from the forehead as well as an ever-expanding area of hair falling out from the crown or top of the head. A U-shaped fringe around the back and sides of the head may be all that is left.
Female pattern baldness is referring to the thinning of the hair or the diffuse pattern of hair loss throughout the scalp.
Hair replacement surgery or follicular transplantation has made many advances over the past 25 years and have helped to improve the lives of many men and women who suffer from male and female pattern baldness.
There are a couple of different types of hair transplant surgeries including scalp reduction and tissue expansion.
A scalp reduction surgery is performed when there are bald areas on the top and back of the head. The man is placed under local anesthesia and a section of the bald scalp is removed all the while the surgeon is loosening and pulling the skin around the area that has been removed until the sides are closely together. Then the surgeon closes the gap with stitches.
A hair replacement option could also include tissue expansion surgery which was first performed on burn patients who have lost a lot amount of skin and now the technique is being used for hair replacement. A balloon like device is inserted underneath a section of hair bearing scalp next to the bald area, then a saline solution is injected. Over a matter of weeks the scan expands to cover it. The patient may look as if they have a large bump on their head and the remedy for that is wearing a hat.
Many of the surgeries and hair replacement costs to cover balding areas and thinning spaces on the scalp run anywhere from $2,000 up to $9,000, plus hospital expenses depending on which procedure a person is having done.
